Mind your fingers (and thumbs)!
So a desperate engineer suddenly is offered a high-paying job, as long as no questions asked. Clearly he was going to lose something; he’s lucky it was just his thumb! Seriously though, he probably would have bled to death, or at least collapsed due to shock before he ever managed to drag himself back to London to get treated, never mind make a visit to Sherlock Holmes to get him to unravel the case.
As it turns out, it was all a scam, and the machine he was brought in to fix was nothing to do with compressing earth into briquettes, but actually being used to counterfeit currency.
At least by surviving this one, he should have learned his lesson. If it’s too good to be true, it’s obviously not true.
