Fade to Black by Tim McBain & LT Vargus

Fade to Black (Awake in the Dark Book 1)Fade to Black by Tim McBain & L.T. Vargus
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a novel that certainly keep you guessing. Jeff Grobnagger (terrific name!) is a reclusive loner, and he likes it that way. Unfortunately for him, he’s become of interest to a strange cult in the area. Somehow they have found out that he has black-outs which cause him to hallucinate being murdered over and over again, and this makes him a target. Why? Bloody good question! And what exactly are these black-out dreams? Your guess is as good as mine.

When a guy called Glenn insists on helping him out, he gains an unlikely friend. But the mystery deepens when Glenn reveals that his daughter is missing, and that this cult may have something to do with it. Maybe.

One moment you think you’re reading a supernatural-horror-mystery, and then all of a sudden it’s an urban crime drama; and back again. Jeff seemed to have had a pretty good life, before these black outs (aside from the usual relationship trauma in his background). Living off of money “earned” a while back, allowing him to keep to himself for the most part. Then his own mind tries to kill him, and so do actual people.

This is very much the beginning of the story. Almost surreal in places. We just start to get to know the characters and the plot begins to move towards the “middle” and then the book ends! Looks like I’ll have to read the next one to find answers. If there are in fact answers…
